A class of fatty acids derived from the oxidation of one of three 20-carbon fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (AA), or dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). Eicosanoids act locally as autocrine or paracrine hormones to modulate a wide variety of biological processes.
